Roles in a Pride
Lion prides are structured communities, where each lion fulfills a specific role to serve their pride in a certain way. Although specific roles differ between prides, they are generally organised in a similar manner.
π Royal Family π
- π Monarch π The ruling leader of the pride. The monarch has the highest authority, and is responsible for the pride and its territory, as well as the animals living in those lands. This rank is typically inherited through birthright, though it may be taken by force. The monarch needs a well-rounded skillset and good leadership qualities.
- βοΈ Consort βοΈ Chosen by the reigning monarch; usually their mate. They share leadership responsibilities with the reigning monarch, often managing internal pride affairs. They work to gain the pride's respect and trust, and create strategic alliances.
- π Heir π The designated successor to the throne, preparing to take over when the current monarch passes away or steps down. They are trained in pride politics, hunting techniques, and military strategies. The heir is typically the firstborn child of the monarch.
- β Prince(ss) β Princes and princesses are the siblings or children of the reigning and previous monarchs. They often hold influential roles in the pride.
βοΈ Fighters βοΈ
- π‘οΈ Guards π‘οΈ The protectors of the pride. Their role is to ensure the pride's safety from external threats. They patrol the territory borders and watch over the pride. A monarch may also assign a personal guard for members of the royal family. The Lead Guard is responsible for overseeing apprentices and making strategic decisions.
- π‘οΈ Warriors π‘οΈ The main defence force of the pride, responsible for fighting in battles, protecting the pride, and leading offensive campaigns against enemies. They also help maintain order within the pride. The Lead Warrior oversees training and holds command over the other warriors.
- πΎ Scouts πΎ Scouts are responsible for tracking external threats and gathering intelligence about the pride's territory and surrounding areas. They are valued for their speed, endurance, and keen senses. They are led by a Lead Scout.
πΉ Hunters πΉ
- π Lead π The lead hunter is responsible for organising hunts and ensuring the pride's needs are met. They coordinate the hunting groups, strategise, and take charge during complex or dangerous hunts. They will also provide mentorship to juniors.
- π Elite π Elite hunters are the most skilled hunters aside from the Lead Hunter. They take charge in dangerous hunts, often hunting larger prey. They lead smaller hunts and teach junior hunters.
- π¦ Hunters π¦ By far the majority of a pride's lionesses consists of hunters. They engage in regular hunts to feed the pride, under the direction of elite hunters or the lead hunter.
- π Juniors π Younger lions who are learning the skills necessary for successful hunting. All lions are expected to learn a baseline of hunting skills, after which they can choose their role in the pride.
πΊ Social Roles πΊ
- πΌ Cubsitters πΌ Lions who watch over and care for cubs and new mothers. They form close bonds with the cubs and teach them social skills alongside the cubs' parents.
- π Caretakers π The caretakers oversee the living space of the pride, ensuring the environment is clean and safe, as well as paying attention to the pride members' health and wellbeing.
- β¨ Elders β¨ The Elder Council is composed of highly respected older members of the pride who have retired from active duty. They offer guidance, wisdom, and advice to the monarch and regular pride members. It is their duty to share the pride's history with their younger pridemates.
- π€ Diplomats π€ Diplomats maintain relationships with other prides and groups, negotiate alliances, and manage conflicts with external groups.
πΏ Other Functions πΏ
- π Royal Mjuzi π The Royal Mjuzi communicates with the Spirits of the Past and oversees important ceremonies. They serve as a healer for the territory, and advise the monarch on spiritual matters. They often come from a long line of Shamans, and are often non-lions, with each territory having its own species that act as their Royal Mjuzi.
- π Majordomo π The Royal Steward oversees the day-to-day goings-on in the pride's territory, manages communications between the monarch and their subjects, and perform administrative duties. Often, the Majordomo is a bird or other flying animal due to their ability to survey the territory easily and travel vast distances quickly. They are appointed by the monarch.
βοΈ Outside the Prides βοΈ
- πͺΆ Sentinels πͺΆ Former pride members or outsiders who are not part of a pride, but still offer loyalty, guidance, or support to a certain pride. Their role often comes with honour and trust, and male sentinels are often chosen by pride females to sire their cubs.
- 𦴠Rogues 𦴠Rogues are lions who roam alone or in small groups, and have no loyalty to any pride. Though rogue families also occur, rogues are often young males who have left their birth pride, and may occasionally enter pride territory to win a mate or challenge the leadership.
